This project is
part of an Inventory Program conducted
by Goiás Utility Company (CELG). The
Inventory Study is a preliminary phase,
essential to develop a hydropower
potential. In this phase, all possible
dams are located trying to find the
optimal way to exploit a river. All
important parameters to evaluate each
Hydropower Plant (HPP) are calculated,
such as firm energy, peak capacity, and
flooded land. The "Rio dos Bois" is a
tributary of Paranaíba River, one of the
most important in the Paraná Basin. The
River is located near Goiania - capital
of the Brazilian central State of Goiás,
and it crosses 25 countries, 19 of them
organized as an association to deal with
the water and soil erosion problems and
have invested in developing the study
"Bois' River Valley Recuperation Plan."
The proposal is based on new regulations
in the Brazilian electric sector; these
regulations allow private investors to
develop studies on hydropower potential.
In Brazil there is an immense hydropower
potential (more than 100,000 MW) to be
exploited, and also CO2 emissions rights
produced by the hydropower plants are
very accurate. The project leader
consultant, Centro Tecnológico de
Engenharia (CTE) a local engineering
firm, is responsible for the Tocantins
Basin Inventory during the 80's,
therefore all his experience and
knowledge will be applied in
implementing this study. Also, Goiás
Utility Company (CELG) is its local
partner. CELG has been a leader in
developing inventory studies in its
concession area.
Hydropower is one of the most important
resources to produce electricity in
Brazil. It is estimated that 120,000 MW
could be developed from this mechanism.
This potential includes small, medium,
and large size dams. Brazilian's
regulations define small dams as less
than 30 MW, medium dams as less than 500
MW, and large above this limit. The
Brazilian law indicates that the
government should give authorization to
small hydropower plants for the
development of a specific site. For
plants above 30 MW dams, it is required
to bid a "concession" term with 35 years
duration after performing an inventory
and feasibility study. |
