Executive Summary

Forest Fazenda São Francisco - Urucuia is a forest protection and sustainable management project situated at the State of Minas Gerais, Municipality of Urucaia, with the cultivation of 9.800,00 hectares of Eucalyptus. The project is an initiative to sequester 5.5 million metric tons equivalent of CO2 emissions. The land is owned and managed by Urucuia Agropecuaria Industrial Ltd.. The project will be submitted for certification under the United States Initiative on Joint Implementation (USIJI). Clean Air S. A., a CO2 rights Development Company has identified the project and will assist Urucuia Agropecuaria in the development of the CO2 emissions component of the project. The total project cost is approximately $ 9.8 million.

A program of massive forest growing can both provide raw materials and also play a very important role in the reduction of CO2 emissions that will contribute to the challenges of greenhouse gas emission reductions in the world. The project will consist of establishing a reforestation project, to be developed in a rural property situated at the State of Minas Gerais, Municipality of Urucaia. The establishment of the forest will be gradual, cultivating 1.400 hectares per year during seven years (2002 - 2008). A eucalyptus-reforesting lifetime may reach 21 years, that is, 3 harvests, one every year for seven years. The predominant vegetation at the planned site is "Savannah Park", the soils in the area are "Latosoil Red-Yellow". The climate, according to Kopen classification, is "Aw". The yearly averages of pluvial precipitation is approximately 1.000 mm with a average temperature of 22º C.
