On July 28, 2004, the U.S. government announced the formation of the Methane to
Markets Partnership. This Presidential initiative sought and secured commitments from Argentina, Australia, Brazil, China, Colombia, India, Italy, Japan, Mexico, Nigeria, Russia, Ukraine, and the United Kingdom to mount an aggressive campaign to capture methane, tap its potential for energy production, and simultaneously remove significant greenhouse gas emissions from various emitters. One ton of methane emitted in
the atmosphere is the equivalent of 23 tons of
carbon dioxide.
The IUEP strongly supports
development of projects capturing methane. For example, one of IUEP's most successful projects, the Ecosecurities Nova
Gerar Landfill is located outside Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. This project represents
the success possible when combining a voluntary,
market-based public private partnership with
national and international goals of reducing
greenhouse gasses. The Nova Gerar project will have a final generating capacity of 7MW, and greenhouse gas emissions reductions of over 7 million tones of CO2 over the 20 year lifetime of the project. IUEP
provided initial funding to this project in
2001.
