Resumen Ejecutivo
The Carlos Casado Carbon Sequestration
Project is a forest protection and
sustainable management project. The project
would consist of two plots of land totaling
approximately 100,000 hectares (250,000
acres), Laguna Tigre (50,000 hectares) and
land 60 km north of Mariscal Estigarribia
(50,000 hectares), in the Gran Chaco. Laguna
Tigre covers a part of the District of
Presidente Hayes and Alto Paraguay and
Mariscal Estigarribia is located within the
District of Boqueron. The nature reserve
would sequester greenhouse gas emissions in
an economically efficient manner, while
conserving land, protecting endangered
wildlife and developing sustainable forestry
activities. The total amount of CO2
emissions reductions achieved by the project
is approximately 3 million metric tons of
CO2 emissions equivalent with a total
project life of 40 years.
Laguna Tigre, an area covering approximately
50,000 hectares, lies within the northern
part of the District of Presidente Hayes and
the southern part of the District of Alto
Paraguay. The topography primarily consists
of dense forests, pastures and palm groves,
permanent lagoons and tributaries from the
Paraguay River. The vegetation in the region
consists of the forests of White Quebracho
and Samu'u trees, the dominant tree species,
White Quebracho trees and Red Quebracho
trees occur in islets. Palo Santo and Labon
trees, forest in gallery, saline thicket,
flood thicket, swampy and marshy lands and
in Spartina Sp. Groves, and Caranda'y Palm
Groves. The vegetation is typical of forest
of Bajo Chaco. That is to say forests of
medium height, forest in gallery in the
riachos.
The fauna is represented almost entirely by
the characteristics of the Chaco Boreal,
except in the propias of the arid terrain of
the west like llama and tagua. There is an
abundance of carpinchos, el cure I, nutrias,
monkeys, foxes and tapirs. The fish and
mollusks are extremely abundant which is the
principal source of alimentation for pumas
and jaguar.
The area located north of Mariscal
Estigarribia, an area covering approximately
50,000 hectares, is located within the
District of Boqueron. Vegetation in the
District, which covers 87% of the 4,670,800
hectare area, includes the following:
Forests of White Quebracho (Aspidorsperma
Quebracho-blanco) and Samu'u trees
(Choroisia insignia). The predominate
species are Aspidosperma Quebracho-blanco
and Choroisia insignis, which are found at
the superior stratum (8-12 m) at the highest
parts of the topographic relief. These
species do not develop in humid areas;
leaves that fall out of drought create the
forest settlement.
Forest of White Quebracho trees – Red
Quebracho trees, Palo Santo and Labon trees,
forest in gallery, flood thicket, and
Spartina Sp. Groves.
This area, the north of Mariscal
Estigarribia, is very representative of the
Alto Chaco, arid and semi-arid. Because of
its sandy and fertile soil caused by low
rain precipitation, it does not have the
dense populations, as does Laguna Tigre. |
